A girl of 12, named Olena, mispronounces words both in Ukrainian and English due to a born brain abnormality. While repeating a word after her EFL teacher, she usually substitutes several sounds. She can say "poo-ti-fee" instead of "beautiful". Besides, there are sounds that she cannot pronounce at all, like [r], [l] etc. Her speech is generally slurred and the rate is slower than normal. If she is asked to repeat the same word several time, in some cases her pronunciation improves but in others she gets irritated and refuses to speak at all. She takes advantage of Ukrainian transliteration of challenging English words.
In the same time, her thinking abilities are normal for her age. She usually accomplishes written activities correctly and in time. Besides, she is quite talented in painting.
In her class she is sometimes bullied by 2 boys who tear her drawings, pinch her or show other forms of disrespect or aggression when the teacher is out of class. This causes defensive behavior: the girl becomes quarrelsome, she refuses to go to the blackboard, to repeat after the teacher, to read. But if she is treated respectfully, defensiveness decreases.
Olena comes from a single-mother family. She spends most of her free time with her grandmother, a retired primary school teacher, who contributes lots of time and effort into her education and development. The grandmother usually follows teachers' advice.
